Soy Wax Candles Versus Paraffin Wax: What's the Difference?
Soy wax is hydrogenated soybean oil; paraffin is refined from petroleum. Soy burns cooler, produces less visible soot and lasts longer for the same size. Paraffin throws scent more strongly and costs less. The health gap between them is smaller than most natural-living content claims — what you're burning matters far less than the fragrance load, the wick, and whether you open a window.
Soy candles vs paraffin candles usually gets written one of two ways: paraffin will poison your family, or there's no difference at all and it's all marketing. Neither is right.
We make soy candles, so we have an obvious stake here. That's exactly why it's worth being accurate about where soy genuinely wins, where paraffin does, and which claim in this category doesn't survive scrutiny.
What paraffin wax actually is
Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum refining — the leftover material after crude oil is processed into fuel, purified and decolourized into the white wax you know. It became the standard candle wax in the late 1800s because it was cheap, plentiful and performed well, and it still accounts for the majority of candles made worldwide.
Its real advantages are practical. It has a higher melting point, holds a large amount of fragrance oil, and releases that fragrance quickly and strongly. If you've ever lit a candle and had the whole room smell within ten minutes, that was almost certainly paraffin.
What soy wax actually is
Soy wax is soybean oil that's been hydrogenated — chemically processed to turn a liquid oil into a solid at room temperature. Worth knowing, because "natural" gets used loosely here: soy wax doesn't occur in nature any more than paraffin does. It's a processed product from a renewable crop rather than a processed product from a fossil one.
It melts at a lower temperature, which is where most of its advantages come from. A cooler burn means less soot, a slower burn, and a longer-lasting candle. It's also biodegradable and washes out of fabric with soap and hot water, which paraffin doesn't.
Its genuine disadvantage: weaker scent throw. Soy doesn't release fragrance into a room as forcefully as paraffin. Makers compensate by adding more fragrance — which, as you'll see below, is the variable that matters most for emissions. A heavily fragranced soy candle is not automatically cleaner than a lightly fragranced paraffin one.
The benzene and toluene claim
This is the claim that drives the whole category, and it deserves a straight answer.
You'll read everywhere that paraffin candles release benzene and toluene — both genuinely nasty compounds. That claim traces almost entirely to a single piece of research presented at a scientific conference in 2009. It was never published in a peer-reviewed journal, the sample was small, and its methodology was criticized at the time. It was picked up by the press, repeated across thousands of blog posts, and has been treated as established fact ever since.
Broader work on candle emissions has generally found that candles burned normally in ventilated rooms produce emissions well below levels of health concern. Some of that research is industry-funded, which is worth weighing — but "funded by people with an interest" is a reason for caution, not a reason to prefer an unpublished conference abstract.
What is well established: all candles are combustion, and all combustion produces fine particulate matter. That's true of soy, beeswax, coconut and paraffin alike. Burning anything in an unventilated room repeatedly is not ideal, and people with asthma or respiratory sensitivity should account for that regardless of wax.
So the honest position is narrower than the marketing: paraffin isn't poison, soy isn't inert, and the real differences are about soot, burn time, sustainability and scent — not toxicity.
What actually affects the air, in order
If indoor air quality is your reason for asking, this is the list that matters — and wax type is near the bottom of it.
- Fragrance load, and what's in the fragrance. The biggest variable by some distance. Heavily scented candles of any wax emit more. And under trade-secret rules a single word — "fragrance" — can conceal dozens of undisclosed ingredients, including phthalates, which are used as fixatives and several of which are endocrine disruptors. Phthalate-free is the specification worth checking. Essential-oil claims are mostly beside the point: essential oils degrade at candle temperatures and throw weakly, which is why almost every scented candle on the market uses fragrance oils.
- The wick. A wick with a metal core is the one genuine red flag left in this category. Lead wicks were banned in the US in 2003, but cheap imports aren't always compliant. Cotton, hemp or wood are what you want.
- Whether you trim it. An untrimmed wick produces dramatically more soot than a trimmed one. Free, takes five seconds, and almost nobody does it.
- Ventilation and room size. A candle in an open living room is a different proposition from the same candle in a closed bathroom.
- Drafts. A flickering flame burns incompletely and sooties. A still flame burns clean.
- Wax type. Real, and smaller than the five above.
Which means a lightly scented paraffin candle with a trimmed cotton wick in a ventilated room is cleaner than a heavily fragranced soy candle burning untrimmed in a sealed bedroom. The label is not the whole answer.

An honest environmental footnote: soy is renewable, but soy agriculture carries its own problems — monoculture, heavy pesticide use, and links to deforestation in South America. "Plant-based" isn't automatically low-impact. Locally grown or certified sustainable soy is meaningfully better than commodity soy, and it's worth asking a maker where theirs comes from.
The other waxes
Beeswax is the oldest candle wax and by most accounts the cleanest-burning. It has a long burn time and a faint natural honey scent — which is lovely and does limit what you can scent it with. It's expensive, and it isn't vegan. One thing to disregard: the claim that beeswax candles release negative ions that purify air. There's no meaningful evidence for it.
Coconut wax burns cleanly and throws scent unusually well for a natural wax. It's soft, so it's nearly always blended, and it's the most expensive of the common options.
Palm wax produces a distinctive crystalline finish and carries serious deforestation concerns. Avoid unless it's certified sustainable, and even then it's a difficult one to defend.
The "100% soy" problem
Here's something worth knowing before you buy anything labelled soy.
Many candles marketed as soy are soy blends — soy mixed with paraffin, usually to improve scent throw and reduce the frosting that pure soy is prone to. There's no legal definition governing how much soy a "soy candle" must contain, and blends are frequently not disclosed on the front of the label.
If it matters to you, look for the words 100% soy specifically rather than "soy" or "soy blend," and look for a maker who says what's in it. A brand that won't tell you its wax composition has told you something.
The same applies to the words on the front. "Natural candles," "clean," "non-toxic" and "non toxic" are not regulated terms in this category. They mean whatever the person printing the label wants them to mean — which is why the wax composition, the wick and the fragrance source tell you more than any of them.
How to burn any candle better
- Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before every burn. The single highest-impact habit here, and it costs nothing.
- Let the first burn pool to the edges — usually two to three hours. Soy has a memory: a first burn that tunnels will tunnel for the life of the candle.
- Burn no more than four hours at a stretch. Beyond that the wick mushrooms and soot increases.
- Keep it out of drafts. A steady flame burns clean; a dancing one doesn't.
- Ventilate. Even a slightly open window changes the picture more than switching wax does.
- Snuff rather than blow. Blowing it out produces a plume of smoke and soot; a snuffer or dipping the wick avoids that.
- Stop about half an inch from the bottom. Burning to the base can crack the vessel.
Soy or paraffin: which should you buy?
Choose soy if you want a longer-lasting, lower-soot candle, if you care about renewable materials, or if you burn candles frequently in the same room. The cooler burn is a genuine advantage in a bedroom or a small practice space.
Choose paraffin if you want a strong scent that fills a large room quickly, or if cost is the deciding factor. It's a legitimate choice, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
Either way, prioritise a light fragrance load, phthalate-free fragrance, a cotton or hemp wick with no metal core, no dyes, and a maker who tells you what's in the thing rather than hiding behind the word "natural."

Are paraffin candles actually toxic?
Not at normal use in a ventilated room, on the evidence available. The widely repeated claim about benzene and toluene comes from a single 2009 conference presentation that was never peer-reviewed and has been criticized on methodology. All candles produce particulates because all candles are combustion — that's the honest concern, and it applies to every wax.
Is soy wax better than paraffin?
For soot, burn time and renewability, yes. For scent strength and price, no. On health the difference is smaller than the marketing implies — fragrance load, wick quality and ventilation all matter more than which wax you picked.
What's the difference between soy candles and regular candles?
"Regular" usually means paraffin. Soy comes from soybean oil, burns cooler and longer, sooties less and costs more. Paraffin comes from petroleum, throws scent harder and costs less. Both are processed products; neither is found in nature as wax.
Do soy candles burn longer?
Yes — typically 30 to 50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size, because of the lower melting point. That partly offsets the higher purchase price.
Why does my soy candle look patchy or frosted?
Frosting is a natural crystallization in soy wax and it's purely cosmetic. It doesn't affect burn or scent. It's actually a reasonable sign that the wax really is soy rather than a paraffin blend.
Are soy candles safe for pets?
The wax itself is fine. The bigger consideration is the scent and the smoke — birds are highly sensitive to airborne particulates of any kind, and cats metabolize essential oils poorly if a candle contains them. Burn in a ventilated room your animals can leave, and keep birds out of the room entirely.
Is beeswax better than soy?
It burns cleanest of the common waxes and lasts longest, but it costs considerably more, isn't vegan, and its natural scent limits what it can be scented with. The claim that it releases air-purifying negative ions is not supported.
How do I know if a wick has a metal core?
Rub the tip of an unburned wick on a piece of white paper. A grey pencil-like mark suggests a metal core. Lead was banned in US candles in 2003, but imported candles aren't always compliant.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep candles away from children, pets, curtains and anything flammable, and burn on a heat-resistant surface.
